Omar Ghayatt was born in Cairo in 1976, where he graduated from the Arts and Education University. In 2003, he received the first state prize ever awarded in Egypt for performance art. The following years, he started touring with his artwork in various theatres and festivals around the world, such as Interakcje Festival (Poland), Cairo Opera House, Vooruit (Gent), Theaterspektakel (Zürich), Temps d’Image (Marne-la-Vallée), Festival Theaterformen (Hannover), Festival Inteatro (Polverigi), Festival a/d Werf (Utrecht), La Friche Belle de Mai (Marseille), Festival DCAF (Cairo), “Selection Suisse” in Avignon. Furthermore, he co-create various works with several national and international artists such as the international novelist Alaa Al Aswany, the dutch-Swiss artist Yan Duyvendak, the Congolese choreographer DeLaVallet Bidiefono, and the French sound artist Maxime Denuc, and the Swiss dramaturgy and filmmaker Nicole Borgeat. In addition, he organized a long-term project in Egypt, named “Sabeel Cairo,” to promote performance art in his native country.
